4 May Barstow to the Granite Mountains,
San Bernardino Co., CA.
run over by a car. I would not have
expected to find kingsnakes in that desert
habitat- sandy, Creosote- scrub without
any rocky areas nearby (species account:
Common Kingsnake).
Then we left for Barstow. We bought
car parts, pizza for dinner, and groceries.
We left just before sunset so we could
drive Hwy 66 past Pisgah lava flow and
look for snakes. Didn't find any but saw
a dozen or so geckos on the pavement- they
seem to be common on every road at night
except for Kelbaker Road, probably because
of the flood control ditches and dikes that
parallel the pavement.
Southwest of Amboy Crater we saw
target practice shooting down at the military
base. They were shooting automatic weapons,
tracer flares, and some kind of small explosives.
It was a good light show even though I don't
like the idea of practicing war.
Then we headed for the Granites via
Amboy and Kelbaker Road.
