Red Spotted Toad
(Bufo punctatus)
6 May Goldstone Spring, Providence Mountains,
San Bernardino co., CA.
T10N R14E Sec 31 sw'1/4. elev. 1420m.
One small, dried up toad found in a
pitfall trap at edge of Desert Almond
bush through which some water from
the spring flows. Surrounding area steep
and rocky w/pinion & juniper trees one
west side; flat, cow trampled area to east
and south.
Spring approx '1/4 mi. southeast of Goldstone Spring,
Providence Mountains, San Bernardino co., CA.
T9N R14E Sec 6 ne'1/4. elev. ~1500m.
Pair of small adult toads in amplexus
in puddle of spring in narrow, sandy
wash below steep, barren rocky hillsides.
About 1400 PST; overcast ~30-50% cloud
cover; ~30°c. Toads tried to hide under
edge of small rock as I watched. When
captured they made no attempt to separate.
The male began to chirp when I put them
into a bag with some water and algae from
the puddle, which is approx 1m wide and 10cm deep.
