Brad R Moon 1987 Species Account Shovel-nosed snake (Chionactis occipitalis) 25 April Kelbaker Road 1 mi. north of Hwy 66 (National Trails Highway), San Bernardino co., CA. Bruce and I found a shovel-nosed snake on the pavement at 1945 pst after a thunderstorm. Habitat is sandy with creosote bushes and other sparse shrubs. Snake is yellow with black saddles that form complete rings from midbody down. There are a few small, dark spots on the yellow between the saddles; no red. Catalog # 55
