traps and headed for the larger patch of mature forest
on the hill above the cattle pasture. Slope ~ 45°, soil
in this area is very clay-like, so real slick after all the
recent rain. Getting tired of falling down (done a lot of it
the last few days...). Area seemed a little drier than
what we've been trapping in, but perhaps not significantly
so. Habitat similar to what we've been looking for:
large trees, many vines + palms, understory patchily
distributed - lots of herbaceous growth in some spots,
usually near a slope or where a tree has fallen,
and very sparse in other areas. Floor covered
with dry leaves, a few logs. Returned to the hotel
~ 1800 and had a big dinner at the restaurant.
Spent the late evening preparing study skins.
Most of the ♀ Heteromys we've been catching are
fairly young - usually nulliparous. Some of the
ones today, however, appear reproductively active.
The P. mexicanus , also, appear reprod. active.

Arose ~ 0045. Hiked over to hill by cow pasture to
check traps. Caught 12 Heteromys desmarestianus,
two of which are very young - recently weaned.
Many traps were visited but not sprung. Duke
caught 8 more Heteromys, 3 Peromyscus mexicanus .
Had breakfast at the restaurant - met 3 people from Texas
