Pozo de Petroleo, 7mi N. Berriozabal, Chiapas, Mexico
December Arose ~0630. Heavy dew, clear skies. Trap line in rocky area yielded only 3 P. mexicanus. Trap line in forest near trail yielded 1 Tylomys (sp.), 1 Oryzomys (sp.),
4 P. mexicanus (and 3 traps that didn't close but were visited. Duke had similar good results on all
4 of his lines (5-4-9-6 captures): 2 Heteromys desmarestinus
1 Oryzomys sp., 7 Tylomys (sp.), 1 Scotinomys (sp.),
13 P. mexicanus. An Artibeus (sp) was found in the mist net this morning, as well. After breakfast,
David went looking for salamanders while Duke + I took tissue samples + skinned 18 of the P. mexicanus.
Put skins aside for stuffing later. Also took tissues,
skinned, and stuffed 7 Tylomys w/ David's help.
~1530 went to set out more traps -- all three of us
went to the same area (where Duke caught the
Heteromys), so our trap lines ended up crossing
and running into each other - very frustrating.
I set one line there, Duke set 3, David one.
David set another line further down the road toward
Berriozabal, I linked further down the trail away
from camp. When I reached another area of
mature-looking forest, hiked in and set 20 traps.
Area has large trees, dense canopy (broadleaf), dense
viny growth, herbaceous ground cover, leaf litter floor,
many mossy rocks, some logs -- similar in overall
appearance to area trapped last night[only farther
