E. Henske 1980 Journal Jalapa to Playa Escandida, Veracruz, Mexico. meadow with many houses nearby. Across the street, March continued where we walked, a dirt road went between a grassy meadow and a plowed field bordered by a corn field and sugar cane. We birded from 0615-0715. 90% cloud cover, 0 wind, 15°C. 720 Great-tailed Grackles ~10 House sparrows 3 Song Sparrows 1 Chipping sparrow 1 Caracara 1 Painted bunting 1 Common Yellowthroat 1 unid. warbler 1 unid. swallow We left the motel ~0800; 10km E of Jalapa on Hwy 140, we turned SW onto the road to Coatepec. Proceeded 10 km along this road, then turned S. Stopped at "Barranca de Teocelo," ~2 km N. of Teocelo. This was an outrageously beautiful river gorge lined with ferns, flowering plants, and green leafy plants. The river was shallow and rocky, more like a large stream. A fish ~60cm long was seen in the water from the bridge over the river. We explored the canyon from 0900-1030, splitting up into small groups. I went
