E. Heske 1980 Journal Jalapa to Playa Escondida, Sierra Tuxtlas, VC, Mexico. forest is amazing. I collected several variously 2 March colored beetles from the leaves of herbaceous cont. plants. The greatest variety was noted in the orthopterans, however. They ranged in size from 2-8 cm. Both long-antennaed and short- antennaed families were present, and at least 10 diff. species could be distinguished by one as unknowledgeable about such things as myself. A large ? (~8cm) was seen hanging from the underside of a leaf - she had just molted and was still clinging to her old cuticle. I also collected two types of walking stick (a "thin" and a "thick" variety), and a ? Amapha butterfly ~ 10cm in wing length. Spiders were abundant. They were usually about 4 cm long (including legs), but occasionally a larger wolf spider more like 8-10 cm long (incl. legs) was seen - one was outside our rooms. All these insects almost makes me want to be an entomologist. A good scare was thrown into us on our return, though, as a black stream of army ants was "flowing" across the cement walk outside our rooms when we got back. We spread Cutler's on our doorstep as they strayed near, and luckily only a few entered our rooms. Playa Escondida and vicinity, Sierra Tuxtlas, VC, Mex.
