Cordoba to Ojo de Agua, Veracruz, Mexico
Dec. cont.
Furled nets ~2200. Turned in ~2300. Vespertilionids only caught early in evening, Phyllostomatids seem abundant during entire period of netting.
Ojo de Agua, Veracruz, to 25.8 mi SW of Tuxtpec, (by rd)
Oaxaca, [illegible] Mexico
January
Arose ~0700. Checked traps - caught 20 P. Mexicanus,
1 Heteromys desmarestianus, 1 Oryzomys fulvescens.
Caught only a single Peromyscus in the area under the coffee plants - also had an animal (probably a Philander,
as there is a lot of fruit rinds, etc. around) overturn +
set off about 7-8 traps in this area. Peromyscus
abundant on the rocky hill sides, slightly less so in
the secondary along the trail Both the Heteromys
and the Oryzomys were caught in secondary near the
trail - the latter where it was especially dense. Duke
had better luck - 1 Oryzomys, 7 Heteromys, 26 Peromyscus.
He had good luck on Heteromys in the flatter areas-
the secondary he set in was denser, lusher in terms
of foliage, more ground cover. Day sunny, clear,
warming fast. Ate breakfast, packed, left camp ~1100.
Returned to Hwy 150, headed E. Took S turn towards
Tierra Blanca; Just past Tres Valles turned SW
towards Tuxtepec. Stopped to pick up some food,
headed SW of town. Stopped at a roadside turnout
25.8 mi SW of Tuxtepec to camp, set traps ~1500.
I set 40 Sheremans/Wen scratch in a patch of
forest on the W side of the road, across a small field.
