OjodeAgua, Veracruz, to 25.8mi SW of Tuxtepec (by rd),
January, cont Oaxaca, Mexico
The area has a canopy of large (DBH up to 1m.) broadleaf
trees, lots of Philodendron-type vines covering trees,
logs, rocky outcrops. There are large rock outcrops,
"cliffs", and caves/natural bridges + arches in the area
with patches of flat ground between them. Ground
has lush covering of leafy herbaceous plants. Duke
also set 40 traps in this area. Elev. ~100 m. After
dinner, spent the evening preparing study specimens
from the P. mexicanus caught this morning. A
note on P. mex: lots of variation, esp. in tail. Those
from Ojode Agua have a distinctly bicolored tail w/
moderate hair covering. Those from Catemaco area
have all dark, mostly naked (rat-like) tails.
Clouded over during late afternoon. Completely
overcast when Turned in ~ 2200. Began raining
at this time.
January
25.8 mi SW Tuxtepec to Vista Hermosa, Oaxaca, Mexico
Rained throughout early part of night. Still overcast,
dark, a little misty in the morning. T~20C, though.
Checked traps (very wet....): caught only two
P. mexicanus. Duke, also, only caught 2 P. mexicanus.
Poor results may be due to weather as habitat
looked more promising than that. After breakfast,
headed back along Hwy 175 to Tuxtepec to get
ice, groceries + supplies for a few-day excursion up
into the mts. Left town ~ 1100, heading SW on Hwy 175 again.
