July
capture was a single Sigmodon hispidus caught by
Phil. Spent the rest of the day karyotyping etc., in
the lab at UCR. At ~1400 Phil + I drove back
towards Escazu to try some more trapping. The
director at the lab told Duke there was a patch of
mature forest near Villa Colon, so we went to look
for it - got to a town on the other side of Escazu,
but couldn't find a forest. It was already 1700, so
after looking around for awhile + asking a few
questions (no good answers...) we set a few traps in
a patch of disturbed forest 1km W, 4km N of
Escazu.
Dense growth of brush, tall grasses, vines in understory.
Some of the large trees were bearing fruit and
many bats appeared at dusk - large-winged span
50!
easily over cm - prob. Artibeus (?). Area surrounded
by coffee plantings or cattle pastures. Doesn't really
look that promising. Overcast, but no rain.

Arose 0030. Went with Phil to check traps (I set 30,
Phil set 50). Both got zilched. Drove to Villa Colon,
further down the road (Hwy 7) after realizing that the
town we had stopped in was Sta. Ana rather than Villa Colon.
Still no sign of a forest. Went back to UCR, spent
the day working in the lab. The director showed me
on a map where the forest is - just NW of Villa Colon.
It's going to be the future site of Universidad de la Paz...
