3.9 mi NW Bochil to 4.9 mi SE of Rayon, Chiapas Mexico
turnout 4.9 mi SE of Rayon for the night. Had
to build a fire from wet wood to cook dinner —
stuffed the animals skinned earlier today afterwards.
Turned in ~ 2130. Foggy, damp, tired. Duke also
set 20 traps in the brush around camp while I was
making dinner.
December
Rayon, Chiapas, to Acayucan, Veracruz, Mexico.
Arose ~0630. Damp, but fog gone. Completely overcast.
Duke checked the 20 Shermans he set around camp —
I was broken, but the others caught 14 animals:
1 Oryzomys, 6 Reithrodonomys (fulvescens?), and
7 Peromyscus zarynchus. In the traps set 3.3 mi
SE of Rayon, I caught 4 Heteromys desarestinianus
(1 additional caught, but escaped when checking trap),
21 P. zarynchus and 1 Marmosa mexicana (dead in trap).
Duke caught 1 Marmosa mexicana and 15 P. zarynchus.
Pretty good % capture — almost every trap in some
areas. Area around campsite was very chaparral-like,
lots of brush bordering agricultural/grazing areas.
Along top of ridge, as described above, but topmost part
of ridge had more open understory, less vines, leaf-litter
floor, a few logs. This area caught the most Heteromys.
Continued W. on Hwy 195 to Villa Hermosa; was stuck
about 2 hrs. here vainly searching for a mechanic to check
the brakes. Frustrated, decided to continue W on Hwy 180
to Coatzacoatl — no luck there either. Found a hotel
