Cerro Moztotol, Chiapas, Mexico
december
Arose ~630. Fog had cleared- sunny, up above the level
of most clouds. Checked trap lines on E. side of road
first- two P. guatemalensis in young broadleaf area.
Pulled all traps on these two lines; still no
captures on upper half-line: habitat to avoid ->
some broadleaf + pine, but canopy not very thick.
Dense shrubby and herbaceous ground cover ~1m tall,
mostly hummingbird flower + another violet scrophulariaceae
some smaller yellow ranunculaceae also in bloom.
E-facing slope, ~40°, soil fairly dry. No captures
at all in two nights. On lower trap line,
W of road and down hill, caught 1 P. guatemalensis
and ONE HETEROMYS NELSONI (Big ♂)!!!
The Heteromys was caught in very moist, W-sloping
hillside (~45°). Ground was covered with viny
and herbaceous plants, ~25 cm tall. Moss covered
most rocks and fallen logs. Some ferns also present.
The canopy was dense, mostly broadleaf but
some pine. Pine needles and leaves mixed on floor.
Duke also caught a Heteromys nelsoni ♀ and one
P. guatemalensis. David caught a Reithrodonomys
(sp?) on theridge where he caught one animal
