E. Heske 1980 Journal december Berkeley Alameda Co. Calif. USA to Puerto Arista, December Chiapas, Mexico. TRAVEL LOG: SAT DEC 6 - Left Berkeley, picked up I-5 heading South. Skirted LA by taking Rt 138 Rt 40 to Hwy 99, to Hwy 58, to Hwy 14 South, to Rt 138 E, 395 S, 15 E and finally got on 10E in San Bernardino, where we stopped for the night. Left Berkeley ~1400, arrived San Bernardino ~2300. Travelling with Duke Rogers and David Good. SUN DEC. 7: Had an early break fast and back on the road by ~7:30. Heading E on Hwy 10. Through Arizona and New Mexico, arrived in El Paso Texas at ~2300. Stayed at another Motel... MON DEC 8: Got insurance at Sanborn's, picked up a few supplies, and crossed the border to Juarez, Mexico at ~1000. Usual delay with tourist passes, inspections. Decided to drive straight through to Mexico City. Headed S. on HWY 45 through Chihuahua. At Jiminez took Hwy 49 to Torreon, then 40 S to 49 (again) to San Luis Potosi, picking up 57 to Mexico City. Arrived in Mexico City ~1000 TUES 9 DEC. Located offices on corner of Isabel de Catolica and Netzahualcoyotl where Direction de la Fauna Sylvestre is found. Man in charge of collecting permits already gone (~1300). Took cheap hotel nearby and spent evening walking Hotel Playa - 250 pesos
