Playa Escondida Sierra Tuxtlas Veracruz, Mexico
The canopy was relatively dense, and although
we could hear several species, seeing them
was difficult. At 0800 Sue, Lonie + Gerhardt
went back for breakfast while Dave + I
continued out along the point for awhile.
The extra effort yielded a new bird - a
Tropical parula - and we got a close view
of 3 short-billed pigeons which were fighting
displacing each other repeatedly) only a few feet over our heads. Twice David + I
tried to locate a bird making a very
Thrush-like call but failed. David thinks
it is a clay-colored robin. It does sound
very much like an American robin but adds
a few notes at the end. We joined the others
for breakfast ~ 0900. Birds seen today:
Cattle egret, Keel-billed Toucan, red-legged
honeycreeper, Collared Aracari, Montezuma
Oropendula, Brown Jay, Masked Tityra,
Boat-billed Flycatcher, Short-billed pigeon,
Tropical parula, White-bellied Emerald,
Rough-winged swallow, Magnificent Frigate bird,
Great-tailed Grackle. Two Squirrel deppei
were noted scrambling in the trees along
the NE ridge top. No birds had been
netted when Dave + I checked the nets
