E. Heske 1980 Journal ...Cerro Mozotol, Chiapas, Mexico Dec. cont. plants. Abundant hummingbird flower in bloom. Several hummers (both green violet-ears and green-throated mountain-gem) active in area. Trees more widely spaced and mostly mature - complete with bromeliads. Elev. 2800 m. Duke and David also set 20 traps here (each.) Site B: 12.6 mi. N. of Motozintla, on Cerro Mozotol, Elev. 2700m. Set line of 20 Shermand bated w/hen scratch, ~10m apart, running down sides of steep slope through ravine. Top of slope has dense ground cover of humming-bird flowers, some grass and other herbaceous growth. Large pines in area as well as some unknown deciduous trees - several brushy thickets in ravine, occasional patches of talus. Duke + David set 20 traps each on slope above road in dense thickets and pine. Site C: 10.8 mi. N. of Motozintla, on Cerro Mozotol, 2450m. Patches of open grass along side of road - this will be our campsite. Set 10 Shermand w/hen scratch on steep 60° slope below road - mostly leaf litter floor, some fallen logs, a few thickets of bamboo-like vegetation. Set other 10 traps in dense chapparal-like growth with thick ground cover of bunchgrass and herbaceous plants on hillside near ridge covered with pine. Some pines on hillside, as well. watched beautiful sunset through the clouds - can see the ocean from here. The mountain, in general, is very picturesque - many small farms growing corn, watermelon, (?) along most of the way up. Only scattered pine forest
