Playa Escondida to Catemaco, Veracruz, Mexico
december is the financial owner (his girlfriend is the official one)
who is trying to be helpful + friendly, but too much
disturbance here to spend tomorrow karyotyping.
will pull traps + leave in the morning. wrote a
short stack of postcards + turned in ~ 2230.
Catemaco to Cordoba, Veracruz, Mexico
december Arose ~ 0630. Drove SE on Hwy 180 to check traps. I
cached 1 Heteromys and 5 Peromyscus mexicanus.
should have caught more, but many of my traps had
been set off and/or overturned by some animal -
notably 3 set along a large log, 2 along a rotten
stump, + the last 3 after that = 8 traps sprung.
Too bad. David caught 1 Heteromys desmarestianus,
2 P. mexicanus, and 1 Oryzomys (Duke unsure if
cowesi or melanotis or?). Duke caught 1 Liomys (sp? =
pictus?), 1 Sigmodon hispidus, 2 Oryzomys (sp?),
and 11 P. mexicanus. Returned to hotel, ate
breakfast, packed, + left. Elev. at above sites
estimated to be ~100 m. Drove N on Hwy 180
to a point just south of Veracruz, then headed
cordoba
Cordoba
Wen Hwy 150 to [illegible]. Arrived Catemaco.
~1500, found place to stay (Hotel BuenaVista,
just outside town ~ 375 pesos), ate dinner + spent the
evening karyotyping, taking tissues, preparing specimens.
Many of the F's, both Heteromys + Peromyscus, have embryos.
See D.S. Rogers' cataloge for data on specimens
prepared. Turned in ~2200. Day was hot, sunny, humid = ~ 27°C.
