E. Weske 1982 Journal! Vicinity of Tilarán, Guanacaste Prov. Costa Rica 2 July cont digging in the area, possibly done by these eritters. Lots of biting gnats down by the river - got bitten all over face + arms - look like I just lost a fight (badly...) Continuing NE of Tilarán, take L. at fork in Rd (toward Arenal). Stopped to set more traps in another patch of forest 5.0 km NE Tilaran (475m) within sight of Laguna de Arenal. I set 50 traps in the forest on the W side of the rd, Dulce set 30 there and 10 in tall grass along road side. Phil set 50 traps in forest to E of rd, down hill across a pasture. Understory very dense with brush, saplings + herbaceous growth near edge, but clears out once inside forest. Floor becomes more open - still lots of vines, but mostly just leaf litter on floor. Spent the night in a hotel in Tilarán which cost $91 = ~$1.50. Windy, cloudy night with some scattered showers. Tilarán to Liberia, Guanacaste Prov. Costa Rica 3 July Arose ~0630. Sunny, scattered clouds, very windy (which keeps it cool...). At the riparian trap site I only caught 1 Heteromys desmarestianus, Duke caught 2, Phil caught 6 Heteromys + 1 Oryzomys alfaroii. His better luck might be attributed to his trapping a slightly wider strip, and trapping near a small agricultural area (for the oryz.?). Several of
