October cont. SCFS, Nevada Co. to 1.6 mi N. Chilcoot, Plumas Co., California and return.
Left SCFS ~1500 for trap site in Great Basin Desert.
D wind, ~15°C, clear. Turned E for 1.9 mi, then
proceeded N on HWY 89. After 14.6 mi, turned
N on HWY 49 at Sierraville, crossed county line
to Plumas Co. after 14.5 mi and continued N
for 7.2 mi, turning E on HWY 70. Proceeded for
2.1 mi to Chilcoot and turned N onto
Frenchman Lake Rd. Drove N for 1.6 mi then
stopped alongside road at desert site. Site
was soft sand flat leading to rocky buttes.
Dominant shrubs were Artemesia tridentata,
Chrysopthamnus nauseosus, Ch. viscidiflorus,
and scattered Purshia tridentata. Oryzopsis
was the dominant groundcover although some
Salsola kali was noted. 25 Museum special
snaptraps with pb+oat bait were set in a line
heading E from the road, ~10m. apart. Traps
were set in the open near shrubs where fresh
tracks could be observed. Rabbit sign and
rodent tracks were abundant. Returned to
SCFS, ~1900. After dinner several people in the
class walked down to the meadow site to check
4 mist nets Dixie had set across the stream.
No captures. Castor canadensis activity was
observed along the stream in the form of dams
and occasional tree-gnawing scars. Full moon.
