Berrio zabal to San Cristobal Chiapas Mexico
Dec. cont.
from La Eglise Santo Domingo, near the marketplace.
Headed E. out of town to go to a locality David
knew about called Zonte h u i t z (a mt.), but turnoff
road was blocked by downed electrical wires. We
headed W. to a spot noticed on the way in to
town - a road leading off the Hwy marked
"Acesso Salida Tunel" 4m W. of San Cristobal.
Arrived ~1430. Had lunch, set up camp, etc. Area
probably not that good for trapping, but will try
anyway. Mostly pines, some mixed broadleaf. Trees
look fairly young (DBH ~ 6" or so; rarely > 12").
Forest floor covered with pine needles, only scattered
herbaceous ground cover. I set 40 traps along
a stream at the bottom of a ravine (sloping
sides ~ 60°) where the vegetation was a little
thicker, but still not very dense. Not very hopeful
for many captures due to steep slope, but
surrounding wood doesn't look like it would
yield anything but an occasional Peromyscus
anyway. Duke set 40 traps (Sherman live/hen scratch)
someplace ~100m down the Hwy that he had noted
earlier + said looked good. David set 20 in the
woods near camp. Elev. here is ~2300m. Very
cold, clammy. Still overcast. Heavy mist set in
just after dark. Duke, David + I prepared study
specimens from 10 P. mexicanus, then turned in ~2200.
