Left SF airport at ~0045, flying on
Pacific Time
Mexican Airlines. Group includes Ted Papenfuss,
David Good, Sue Kaiser, Kurt Schwenk, Lorrie
Klosterman, Gerhardt Roth, Allan Larson. All are
presently assoc. with MVZ, UC Berkeley. We will
be spending 10 days in Mexico, primarily at
Playa Escondida, Veracruz, to trap small
mammals, mist net birds + bats, watch birds,
collect salamanders, lizards, anurans, snakes,
and generally get an impression of what a
tropical rain forest is like. For the most

T. Papenfuss or K. Schwenk; birds, D. Good or
S. Kaiser; mammals, E. Heske.
Arrived Guadalajara ~0600 Central Time
just as sun was beginning to rise. 1hr layover
while tourist pass checked, etc. From window
at airport, saw 1 Common Egret, 2 cattle Egrets,
2 House sparrows ("Cosa" sparrows?), and numerous
Great-tailed Grackles. Reboarded plane at ~0700,
and arrived in Mexico City ~0800. After a few
unnerving experiences at the airport involving a
missing piece of luggage (all the mammal traps!)
and a VW bus reservation nobody seems to
know about, we finally got on the road
at ~1030. We have two vehicles: a VW bus,
