San Isidro to Cd. Neilly, Puntarenas Prov. Costa Rica
Aug cont.
short, tan dorsal fur, white under parts - called "species C" tentatively. Duke's line was only about 20 m N of mine, but the area was more lush - more verdant ground cover - and this line caught 14 animals:
2 Proechimys, 1 Oryzomys "spC", and two other (possible) types of Oryzomys - 5 fairly large (~40g) individuals of a uniform dark brown color and 5 smaller Oryzomys (scotinomys size) of the same uniform dark brown. I can't think of a good reason to explain the radical difference in trap success between the two sites - or why so few animals were caught at the site nearer to San Isidro. We headed S. on Hwy 2 again, planning to reach San Vito by early afternoon. Along the way we collected the skull of a roadkill Agouti 15km E (by rd) Palmar Norte. There was forest to one side of the road and tall grass blending into brush and a gradual slope down to a river on the other.
We arrived in Cd. Neilly and had lunch. We located the road to San Vito after lunch (~1330) and headed out. The road was unpaved with many large rocks, potholes + gullies - as well as going up and over a very steep mountain. After struggling along for over half an hour, we finally came across some people living along the road. They said it would take us another 3 hrs to reach San Vito
