E. Heske 1979 Journal 5 october Sagehen Creek Field Station (SCFS) and vicinity, Nevada Co., California Left SCFS (0.0mi) at 1700 to set traps. ~15°C, 0 wind, high thin clouds forming after clear afternoon. Proceeded E for 0.9mi to meadow and forest sites. After short discussion with Jim about what species to expect, teamed with Rick Ostfeld and drove 0.1mi further E to chaparral site. Site characterized by dense manzanita brush up to 1m. high, frequent fallen logs, and scattered young Jeffrey pine up to 3m. high. Slope ~30° facing S. Top of ridge had unstabilized rocky talus and crown of mature Jeffrey pine. Total area of site ~250m x 300m, bounded by forest. 25 Museum special snaptraps set at ~10m. intervals in direct line up slope, baited with peanut butter and oatmeal. When possible, traps were set along fallen logs or under pine saplings. Traps 1-17 in manzanita brush, 18-19 in manzanita/talus edge, 20-25 in forest/rocky talus edge. 1 ♀ Eutamias amoenus was found caught in trap #1 when returning down line at 1820. Trap was reset. Set 25 Museum special snaptraps, pb+oat bait, ~10m. apart in grassy meadow on S. side of slow-moving stream 2-4m. wide. N. side of stream had nearby rock field with abundant sign (scat and marking) of Neotoma cinereus. Rick and I set the snaptraps in vole runways when possible, but increasing darkness made it difficult. Jim and several members of the class had set 8 Tomahawk
