E.Heske 1980 Journal Puerto Arista to Huixtla/Tapachula, Chiapas, Mexico December Tapachula. Road not well kept up - rutted, lots of cont. holes - took 2 hrs to get to Nueva Alemania. Told by unohombre there that we could go no further by car; Pinabete was only reachable by burro. Returned via rest of loop to Huixtla - road passable, but rough in some spots. Had to ask directions mucho, as one turn on the right was missed (the turn for Huixtla) that went along a ridge. Passed through several small towns with people that look much Indian. They seem to make a living mostly by harvesting the coffee beans that grow abundantly throughout the area and drying them on patches of concrete in front of their homes. There were lots of patches of mature forest, very many areas dominated by coffee plants which cover some hillsides like chaparral, and even some cultivated patches. Never got to very high altitudes (no pine/oak) - highest was ~500m. A very tiring ride due to poor road - got back to Huixtla ~1700. Headed N. of town to a patch of nature lowland forest Duke had trapped previously and captured Heteromys goldmani in. (15.5 mi SE by road from Magdalena, 50m elev.) Area is along dirt road on rt.
