Turrialba, Cartago Prov., to Limón, Limón Prov., Costa Rica
July, cont.
Duke caught 1 Heteromys, 1 large Oryzomys that's about the same size/color as the O. devius caught in the Cordillera Central. Phil caught 3 Heteromys and an alfaroí-type Oryzomys, all in a small patch of semi-disturbed forest at the edge of the mature forest. Ate breakfast + headed for Limón.
The route allowed us to see how really cut up this part of the country is - most of the forest is cleared away to allow extensive cane or coffee plantings. Near Limón there are a lot of banana plantations as well. Didn't see any place that looked worth trapping the whole way. Limón itself is a rather run-down, unpleasant city. Something in the air feels more discontented than other places we've been. More dirt + poverty apparent here. We rented a hotel room + decided to set traps in a patch of forest 4.6 km W. of Limón that we had passed on the way in. Started setting traps ~ 1600.
I set 60 in the forest, 10 in some secondary along the road. Dulce set 70 in the forest, Phil set 30. The forest, again, looks good for Heteromys. Flat, for a change, dense overstory with several trees of DBH 24ft. Leaf litter floor - patches where there is a dense herbaceous undergrowth ~ .75m high, some patches of dense vines. Phil set up two mist nets for bats with Duke's help. We left them fueled and
