second line I set W. of the road yielded only a single
P. guatemalensis . This line was on slightly steeper
terrain, more leaf-litter on floor, not as moist. May
not be ideal Heteromys habitat, so will pull these traps
later today. The line of 8 traps ~500m S. of our
campsite yielded 1 P. guatemalensis , also. David
(60 traps)
caught 1 P. boylei . Duke caught 3 Heteromys nelsoni
(80 traps)
and 3 P. guatemalensis in the area near the 8 traps
I set. After breakfast, Duke + I took tissue samples
from and prepared study skins from 11 of the
P. guatemalensis . This took from ~1000 - 1315. Had
a quick lunch, then pulled all traps from the
second W-of-road line. Took these to the area Duke
had such good luck with this morning. Reset the
8 that were there plus two more, then added 20 on
to the line. Habitat is mostly large pine, some broadleaf,
but canopy not very thick. Disturbed areas in early
successional stages bordering patches of forest. Many
fallen logs, most covered with moss and ferns. Fairly
dense low herbaceous ground cover. Floor covered with
mixed pine needles and leaves. Returned to camp
~1630 and changed location of several traps on
ravine line (hopefully for the better!) Added 4 more
traps in the general area where the two Heteromys
were caught. Coincidentally, the second Heteromys I
caught was only one trap down from where I caught
