E. Heske 1980 Journal Vicinity of Huixtlas to Cerro Mozotol, Chiapas, Mexico der. cont. 40 traps, Duke caught 4 pig out of 60 traps. No Heteromys. Did not get a chance to set boat nets because of warning of banditos, but had seen several before we left last night. Feeling generally disappointed about our slow start, began to look in earnest for Cerro Mozotol. Asked several natives for directions, and often received directions to Motozintla de Mendoza, NE of Huixtla. Took the road out of Huixtlas to try to find C. Mozotol or at least suitable habitat (pine/oak). It was not so important to get H. goldmani as Duke already has a sample from this area collected in 1979. The Peromyscus gymnotis were taken, hopefully to be brought back alive to the U.S. for chromosome banding. It is imperative to collect some H. nelsonii however. These are known only from high elevation, moist pine/oak (~2300 m). Two localities prev. recorded were Pinalete, which was unreachable, and Cerro Mozotol, which we hope to find today. At ~930, headed N, from Huixtlas on well-paved road. Road passes through many small towns. As along road (loop) taken yesterday, there seems to be many patches of relatively undisturbed lowland rainforest along either side but the slopes are very steep. After about 20km, road becomes a little more rough, but still well passable - unpaved in spots, but overall good, ~600m elev.
