my traps had been visited but not sprung. Perhaps they stuck, or perhaps the large cockroaches under the treads kept them from going off-
anyway, I felt I should have caught more. I neglected to mention yesterday that we picked up a hitch hiker who told us that there were many tierciopelos (Roothrops) in the area. As if to prove him correct, later that day we were stopped by some people who said they were looking for antivenin because someone had just been bitten - Phil gave them 2 of our packets (I was off setting traps when this occurred.) Anyway, we've been lucky so far, but it's a reminder to be careful.
Howler monkeys were heard in the distance as we checked traps in the riparian site. The large areas of grassland (prob. cleared for grazing as the patches of forest are otherwise pretty dense) with their scattered trees flagged by the winds remind me of some kind of African savannah. The trap site nearer to Laguna de Arenal yielded 5 Heteromys to me, 4 to Phil.
Duke got zikked. Returned to Tilaran 0930 to check out of hotel + eat breakfast. Stopped outside of town later on so Phil could see if any of the ?? were pregnant and preserve embryos. Several were (at least 3-), and a couple of these
