Top of the hill first and reported seeing a Lynx rufa near start of first series of traps. I didn't get to see it, but fresh scat was at the spot where Steve said it went into the chapanal. About a third or more of Kurt's + my snap traps were sprung and empty, probably due to the heavy rain.
1 juv. O^7 Peromyscus truei was caught at stake #11 in a trap set partly out in the grass, a hermit thrush was caught at stake #14, and 2D Dipodomys venustus was caught at stake #17. The other lines yielded similar low results and overall success [illegible] was well below 10%. Info on captures for the other lines is on file at HNRH if desired.
Spent the late morning and early afternoon in the dining hall reading + bullshitting w/ Willie and Steve. At 1530 I went with the 2nd crew to check the Calhoun line again. Jim broke apart the fresh Lynx scat noted earlier. It contained fragments of a Thomomys skull. There were no captures in the snap traps. Hiked down through the chapanal and across the fields at the bottom. 3 Taricha granulosa were noted in the grass along the trail on the way.
Stan had caught an Ambystoma tigrinum and a Taricha earlier this morning, but kept them together in a plastic bag and the A. tigrinum died (probably from Taricha toxin). We stopped at the Cattle Pond (see map) to set up 3 mist nets in a semicircle across and around the pond. Still over cast w/ occasional showers.
