several Neotoma cinerea nests along the stream bank on
the N edge of the field, many of which appeared active.
Two in particular - located beneath the dome-like canopy
of a large, lone oak - were chosen for trapping to get a
subject for the beta-light collars. 1♀ T. bottae had
been caught in the gopher traps. Jim explained some of
the things he was looking at in the gopher pops - of
particular interest was the use of electrophoresis to
determine ♀ parenthood (+/- mating system). It would be
worth while to see if this technique is applicable to
heteromyids - I'd like to know if K-rats are mating
non-randomly (seems probable). Light rain began at dusk.
After dinner, Jim gave a slide show of his trips to Peru.
~2300, I followed several members of the class to an
area ~200m E of the labs where a few Sherman live traps
baited w/rolled oats had been set near some Neotoma
nests. 1♀ was caught in a trap set by Willie Bemis.
Animal was kept for a pet. Upon return to dining hall,
briefly tried out night vision scope in back yard.
Like watching snowy B/W TV. Would be difficult to
follow behaviors, but probably good for tracking
movements. Will try out again tomorrow in comb. w/ beta light.
