E. Heske 1980 Journal Huixtlas to Pozo de Petrolio, 7.0 mi N. Berriozabal, Chiapas, Mex. December narrow, winding road connecting to Hwy 190. Then headed NE to Barriozabal. Turned N on paved road until reached town square w/church; go past for a couple blocks, then turn right until a "main" dirt road reached (about 4 blocks). This road heads N, out of town to an old Pozo de Petrolio (oil well). Road is not very good - probably impassable during rainy season. Follow rd. until reach a fork - take right branch - rd. continues past an old finca, then take the left branch of the next fork. A dead end is reached at 7.0 mi. Arrived at ~1530. David went (2 Bolitoglossa, see D.A. Wood notes) looking for salamanders while Duke + I went to set traps. To the left of the dead end are two paths into the forest; we took the furthest left. This area seems to be used frequently by locals - several people passed on rd. and others here collecting some kind of fruit/veg. Talked to one hombre - it seems that two people were here collecting snakes only 4 days ago (Ted Papenfuss?) Duke chose a spot to set his line in some forest that looked relatively undisturbed. A lot of slash along sides of trail, however. I began to set a line a little further on - habitat is dense canopy of broadleaf trees with very thick understory of viny plants and a moderately dense herbaceous ground cover.
