E. Heste 1981 Journal May 3 UC Berkeley, Alameda Co., to Isabella Res., Kern Co., Calif. Left UC ~ 1700. Travelling in 3 vehicles: Beth Braker + Phil Brylski in Beth's pick-up; Larry Riggs, myself + 3 107 students in Larry's van; 9 more 107 students in a 3rd car. Headed S on 580 to I-5, turned E on Hwy 46. Stopped for dinner at Hwy 46 exit ~ 2100. Continued on along Hwy 46, turning S on Hwy 99, then E on Hwy 178. Pulled off on a side rd. alongside Isabella Reservoir (mileage unknown) for the night at 0230. I set 15 traps (Sherman non-folding baited w/ oatmeal) before turning in; Phil set 9 baited w/ PB and 2 students (Cathy + Marina) set an additional 9 baited w/ PB. Habitat was coulter pine, hilly terrain with many large boulders, rock-piles, and brush (Chrysothamus viscidiflorus C. nauseosus, some short scrubby oaks and Mesquite Prickly pear, penstemon, mustard, morning glory + many other plants in bloom. Clear, bright night (3/4 moon). Warm- barely need a jacket, no wind. Elev. ~ 3000 ft. 23 May Isabella Res., Kern Co., to Yucca Valley, 7.5 mi E Hwy 14 at Coso Jct., Inyo Co., California Arose ~ 0600. Clear, no wind, ~ [illegible] 18°C. Checked traps - caught 2 Peromyscus boylei, 1♂ w/ descended testes, 1♀ w/ nipples well worn but apparently not lact. There was a lot of sign of Neotoma lepida
