Vicinity of Huixtla to Cerro Mozotol, Chiapas, Mexico
Dec. cont.
Pass through town of Belisario Dominguez ~25 km.
About 5 mi Past B.Dominguez, ~900m elev., begin to
see some pines. There is a lot of agricultural activity,
so not very extensive Forests - much open field.
~50km from Huixtla, reach Motozintla. By this time we
have figured out that Cerro Mozotol must be the mt.
near the city. At first we drove past Motozintla looking
for a road going up the mt. or in that general direction -
Chiapas map inaccurate in this respect. After asking
directions several times, finally got on rd. going
out of city and up mt., over mt. to El Porvenir. Gave
ride to unohombre, who guided us up a winding but
passable dirt road to an abandoned telecommunications
station at the top - very windy here - gust 40-50 mph,
14°C, clouded in. Many places along last couple
miles of road looked good for trapping - lots of
pines, spanish moss, bromeliads, some birch or alder -
very steep slopes, however. Had lunch on top of
mountain, then chose 3 spots to set out trap lines.
Site A: 13.5 mi. (by road) N. of Motozintla de Mendoza,
Cerro Mozotol. Set 20 Sherman collapsables baited with
hen scratch. 10 set ~10m apart down slope (~45°) in area
with leaf litter floor, many saplings and smaller trees as
well as larger trees (trunk DBH ~6cm). Trees mostly alder(?).
Second series of 10 set ~10 m. apart along slope rising away
from road. Dense ground cover, herbaceous, viny and shrub-like
