E. Weste 1980 Journal Huixtas to Pozo de Petrolio, Tami N Berriozábal, Chiapas, Mex. Dec. cont. rotten fallen logs. Floor covered w/ brown leaves. This site is not quite as moist or lush as the cloud forest ravine trapped on Cerro Mozotol however. Viny plants make rough moving - also, jumbled rocks a little more common than ideal - in some places that's all there is, and Duke says Heteromys don't like rocks so much (prefer logs + vegetation). Set second line of twenty Shermans when scratch on opposite side of trail - ran into a clearcut after ~10 traps, however. In backtracking, ran into Duke's trapline (just as I was setting into what looked like prime habitat - it figures). Had to set last 5 traps betw. trail + clearcut - prob. not a very good area. Area in general as described above but not as rocky. Also, first signs of possible dysentery appear - ugh. Duke got out 80 traps in the time it took me to set 40... while I made dinner, D+D set up a mist net across the trail next to camp. A check after dinner yielded 1 Pteronotus davyi. Net to be left up overnight. Turned in ~2200. Elev. here is 950m. Moon 3/4 full tonight, very bright; up for first part of night. No wind, but cool, humid air makes it feel chilly/clammy. Some puddles in rd. indicate a recent rain in this area. Temp. prob. down to ~10°C tonight. Quite a change (again) from hot, humid Huixtas.
