E. Heske 1981 Journal Isabella Res, Kern Co., to Yucca Valley, 7.5 mi E of Coso Jct. (Hwy 14), Inyo Co., California. habitation in the mesquite brush and rocky areas above camp. The other teams caught 3 Neotoma (2♀, with well-worn nipples, 1♂ w/desc. testes) and 3 Peromyscus. Peromyscus were released unsexed - Phil thought they were maniculatus. Ate a pokey breakfast, broke camp + left ~0945. Continued E on Hwy 178 over Walker Pass, pulling off on a dirt road S of Hwy 178 to Robber's Roost. Road was 6.4 mi W of intersection Hwy 178 and Hwy 14. Spent the late morning, early afternoon hiking to the rocks through a Larrea, Atriplex, Artemesia, Chrysothamnus flatland. Lots of lizards: Cnemidophorus tigris, Callosaurus draconoides on the flats, 1 Sceloporus magister juv ♀ found in a yucca bush, 1 Phrynosoma platyrhinos found on flats, 1 Uta stansburiana on the rocks. No falcons seen in rocks, but 1 Barn owl (Tyto alba). Lots of holes w/white wash. Phil says prairie falcons have been known to breed here. Owl pellets yielded Neotoma and Dipodomys skulls. Also noted Lepus californicus, Ammospermophilus leucurus. Sunny, hot ~37°C, but clouds building up. Left Robber's Roost ~1450.
