Playa Escondida to Catemaco, Veracruz, Mexico.
December Heteromys were caught both in the areas of denser
understory and along logs, natural "corridors" in the
more open areas. Again, note ongoing reproductive
activity. Decided to trap for a night in an area
just S. of Catemaco that Duke thought looked
pretty good, so we packed up and moved to a
hotel in the city of Catemaco (Hotel Cristal = 264p.)
Elevation at all above trap sites probably no more
than 50m-100m. Spent early afternoon stocking
up on groceries, etc. Skinned, took tissues on some
Peromyscus. About 1530, headed S on Hwy 180 to
find good spot to trap. Difficult to do as entire
area is heavily used for grazing + agriculture -
mostly open pasture with only small patches of
forest. Duke dropped David + I off at a point
9.5 mi SE Catemaco by rd. to set traps in what
looked like a forested area. It turned out to
be a coffee finca, so we hiked across the rd. +
SE a short distance and set traps in the
forest there. Slope ~30°, w-facing. Trees not
that large - afew w/ DBH of ~2ft. Dense w/
saplings, vines, young coffee plants, trees w/DBH of<1ft.
Leaf litter floor, not much herbaceous cover, we each
set 20 Shermans w/hen scratch. Duke set 35 Shermans
at a locality 8.3 mi SE Catemaco by rd in the meantime.
Returned to hotel, made dinner. Spent evening
preparing study specimens. There is an American who
