Cerro mozotol, Chiapas, Mexico
dec. cont.
to car to wait. Duke finally came by w/ mechanic ~1500.
Drove back up mt. to check final two trap sites.
At Site B, first 3 traps sprung, no animals - reset. 2 other
traps also sprung, knocked over - one looked stepped on.
Reset latter two more away from a path they were near.
Caught two P. guatemalensis and one Neotoma mexicana.
David caught 1 P. boylei and 1 Neotoma mexicana; Duke
cought 2 P. boylei. Left all traps with no animals set
for another night. ~1700, sunny. Fog/clouds just beginning
to settle in. At site A we were above the clouds - looking
down on them as from an airplane. Fog just beginning
to be noticeable here, ~1730. Caught 3 P. guatemalensis
along line of 10 located in broadleaf / sapling area. No
captures in dense herbaceous area. Set 17 more
Sherman traps in very moist, mossy area on opposite
side of rd. Dense canopy of broadleaf trees, many
fallen logs, ground thick with moss, ferns, herbaceous
plants. Finished setting traps in late dusk. Duke had
cought 3 P. guatemalensis; David caught 1 P. boylei.
Each set another box (18 or 19) of traps. All traps
w/o an animal left out for another night. Fog (clouds
rolling in thick by dark (~1830). David set up a
mist net, as we saw a few bats in the dusk, but
it was soon dripping wet, so we took it down. 4 mice
died today during the trip back up the mt. - prob. from
the heat generated by the drive shaft (3 were on the floor)
