could do anything else. We went out at ~1630 to finally set traps—set them in the secondary and disturbed forest areas 3.9 km SE of El Coco in the vicinity of the local dump. I set a line of 30 in a forested area—the canopy is moderately dense with a few trees reaching DBH of 1-2', but mostly smaller. The area starts out flat but the trap line goes up the slope of a small hill (~50 m) then down a ravine. Leaf litter floor, lots of vines. The understory is readily traversed, but there is a good ground cover of both herbaceous monocot-like plants ~1m tall and a more leafy, woody-plants also ~1m tall or less... I also set a line of 20 in an area with bunchgrass (large bunches, ~1m high + 1m wide) and scattered saplings. Duke set 70 traps, Phil set 80. Returned to the hotel + spent the night in a bar—The area we are staying at is a small cove with a few islands in the entrance—some small yachts and other sailing craft anchored near shore. Nice beach, a few palm trees (coconut...), open air restaurant. Met an expatriate German (WWII pilot) who owns a finca near the Nicaraguan border (named Heinz) and a Costa Rican employee of his named Leonard—told us to go to the festival in Liberia tomorrow...
