E.Hesle 1981 Journal 3 May Isabella Res., Kern Co, to Yucca Valley, 7.5 mi E Coso Jct. (Hwy 14), Inyo Co., California Turned N on Hwy 14, heading toward Little Lake. At Coso Jct., just past Little Lake, pulled off at the rest area. Headed E on the road behind it, towards some low hills. At 7.5 mi, took a left turn (1st left after gate at entrance to navy property). Drove ~ 1 mi along this road until habitat became valley with Joshua trees, yucca, Chrysothamnus and Artemesia between rocky hills. Stopped here to camp. I set 23 Sherman traps baited w/ PB and oatmeal about 10 m apart in a line from the road to a large rockpile and then back. Lots of sign of rodent activity (burrows, paths). Also lots of scorpion + wolf spider burrows. The rest of the class also set traps = 140 total. Many belly plants in bloom, and bladder sage. Noted an occasional cholla cactus, also. Ate dinner during late dusk, spent the evening sitting around with the group. Turned in ~ 2230. Clear sky, rising around moon, warm ~15°C. 24 May Yucca Valley, 7.5 mi E Coso Jct.
