Isabella Res., Kern Co, to Yucca Valley, 7.5 mi E
Coso Jct. (Hwy 14), Inyo Co., California
Turned N on Hwy 14, heading toward Little Lake.
At Coso Jct., just past Little Lake, pulled off
at the rest area. Headed E on the road behind
it, towards some low hills. At 7.5 mi, took
a left turn (1st left after gate at entrance
to navy property). Drove ~ 1 mi along this road
until habitat became valley with Joshua trees,
yucca, Chrysothamnus and Artemesia between
rocky hills. Stopped here to camp. I set
23 Sherman traps baited w/ PB and oatmeal
about 10 m apart in a line from the road
to a large rockpile and then back. Lots
of sign of rodent activity (burrows, paths). Also
lots of scorpion + wolf spider burrows. The rest
of the class also set traps = 140 total. Many
belly plants in bloom, and bladder sage. Noted
an occasional cholla cactus, also. Ate
dinner during late dusk, spent the evening
sitting around with the group. Turned in
~ 2230. Clear sky, rising around moon, warm ~15°C.
