San Cristobal to 3.9 mi NE Bochil, Chiapas, Mexico
december Arose ~0630. Checked trapline along creek; caught
4 P.boylei. Day is sunny + clear - nowind, ~10°C but
warming fast in the sun. David caught 1 P.boylei and
1 Reithrodonomys (small, looks ~8-9g; colored like a
megalotis ) along the edge of forest / secondary growth
near camp. Duke's lines through the forest
yielded 11 P.boylei. Forest in general has high
canopy of pine, secondary canopy of oak (~10m),
and scattered herbaceous ground cover w/needles on
floor. Ate breakfast, prepared to leave. Two of
the P.mexicanus, two P.gymnotis died of cold
last night. Also, 5 of the P.boylei in Duke's traps
were dead. Headed in to San Cristobal to get
some groceries, water. Market place is great - would
love to spend a day or two here just wandering
around the market and shops, but no time
(Cas usual-). Water purification place not open
today (Sunday); no unleaded gas anywhere either.
wasted the morning driving all the way back
to Tuxtla Gutierrez in search of unleaded gas
with no luck. Finally had to fill it with Nova.
Took the Hwy 195 North just W. of Tuxtla G.,
heading for a locality Duke wants to trap near
Rayon. Stopped at a roadside cracked rock/gravel
pile 3.9 mi NE of Bochil to set traps, as it was
getting late (~1545). Area looked good at first
