Cerro Moztotol, Chiapas, Mexico
Dec. cont.
from ~ 1000m to ~ 2000 m. due to habitation. Above that
there are few houses and much mature forest. It is
clouded near the top and some areas are very moist.
Sites B+C, however, seemed somewhat dry. Turned in ~2000.
Cerro Moztotol, Chiapas, Mexico
Dec. cont.
Arose ~ 6:30. °8C. Foggy / Cloudy. Checked traps at site C.
I caught 1 Peromyscus guatemalensis, adult ♂, and
2 P. boylei in trap line below road; another 2 P. boylei
in dense thicket/chaparral on W. side of road. Duke
caught 2 P. guatemalensis ; David caught 2 P. boylei . Again,
no Heteromys. Talked for awhile with uno hombre who lived
nearby – he came over to investigate us. Waited for short
time for fog to lift, sun to dry out tent. However, car
stalled when turning around and couldn't be started again.
Some passers-by helped push, but couldn't jump start
(automatic). Battery seems too low (used car light for writing
field notes last night!) Truck stopped to help, but no jumper
cables – tried linking their battery to ours via some wires from
a transformer, but no luck. Possibly starter or solenoid
trouble? Second truck stopped – Duke + 2 Mexicans from
Mex. City hitch ride down to Motozintla to get a
mechanic + return. ~5 min later, another truck stops,
has jumper cables – car starts! David + I then headed
down mt. to intercept Duke – stopped just outside
Motozintla – car starts fine. David stayed w/car, I
walked in to town looking for Duke - no luck, so returned
