Yucca Valley, 7.5 mi E of Coso Jet. (Hwy 14) to Darwin Falls, Inyo Co., California
May cont and Jim Stuart showed up while we were there. Saw many Buto boreas in the stream. Phil + I left the group and returned to camp to set traps at sundown. I set 18 traps in the canyon W. of the campsite (about 2 mi down Darwin Falls turnoff, where chain blocks road + old homestead is). Very gravelly, rocky soil with lots of Larrea, a few Artemesia. Set 20 more traps in a slightly sandier area with more sage, some Larrea and Chrysothamnus alongside road about .5 mi S of homestead. During process of setting traps, I almost stepped on a Crotalus mitchelli, which Phil + I restrained in a cardboard box until Harry came to collect it. Also collected a good-sized Tarantula to show the students - then released it. Been seeing several bats - some larger, light colored ones which may be Antrozous pallidus, and some smaller ones - either Myotis or Pipistrellus. After dinner, went night-driving for herps. I went with Kurt, Jim + Maurina, the rest of the group went with Harry in Larry Rogg's van. We made two runs along Hwy 190 from Darwin Rd. W. to the scenic viewpoint pullout overlooking the Panamint Valley. We collected 5 banded geckos (Coleonyx variegatus) and 1 Uta.
