Own Notes Got this species at Seronga, Ngamiland, Bechuanaland. Seronga is a Bayeyi and Mambu Bushu native village on one of the swamp islands of the D. Kavango River Delta. This country is intermixed with lagoons, branches of the river, swamps, grassy meadows, and occasional trices of land. Any land that rises above the marshes is entirely of sand. The meadows are thickly swept out with grasses and reeds; the slightly higher lands are covered with

thorn bush and small trees like Mopane and Crocodile tree - the natives say these Baboons are fairly numerous here. Nov. 9, 1950 Today I saw over 50 of these Baboons crossing a large grassy meadow. Many disappeared into the forest while a few lingered behind. I think one had been injured by a native hunter and were trying to help this one. This is the largest troop of Baboons I have ever seen. No measures them but found it difficult to get a shot as the bush was dense and they were on the move. Finally shot a young one who was watching me from a tree. As they travel these Baboons make awful noise, barking, squealing, and crashing through the brush.

Africa, Graaf Renetl, Karoo, Gladysdale Farm near Krugersdorp in the Transvaal, Schieffontein, Manguvalus and Malepoble, Debeursland. They are found almost any place where they can take shelter in rocky outcrops, and mountains. I have seen them in many places in South Africa. However, most of my observations were made in South West Africa where they may be seen by the hundreds, where they have so much natural cover and protection. They usually sleep in some branty or rocky shelter or cave in the mountains. In the dry season they make daily visits to waterholes. By the way rainy season, they do not come to water holes quite when they can get water in the field. They are difficult to hunt because their telescopic eyesight make them

hard to stalk. The troop has a sentinel who stands on the alert while the others are searching for food or resting. When pursued they let out throaty grunts and roars. A full grown male makes a loud wahoo sound. They jump and bound along over the rocks with amazing speed. Its difficult to shoot one while they move thus as they do not run in a straight line but bound up and down and to both sides in a rolling motion. The leader of the troop barks orders to the others. If any member is in trouble, the old leader will come to his assistance. Usually all the elders of a troop will come to the assistance of any member in trouble. They love to sit on ledges to sun themselves. I've watched a whole troop on a ledge watch me swimming. They were very human like in some of their actions. Young ones scampered and played about. Some sat with their arms about each other. Their food, spammed from dung, is mainly composed of insects, Aporions, leaves, and vegetable matter. They have certain places where they collect and deposit their dung. They favor caves, ledges, and cliffs overlooking streams or waterholes.

Eyes very large with dark grey ring around them! Whitish grey patch between eyes. Nose dark brown. Hair on head dark grey-very soft and short about 1/4 to 3/8 long. Chin whitish grey hairs. Body - Soft dark grey hair. Dark slate grey bases. Belly a more whitish grey. White space along central posterior sides. Fore feet - 5 finger like digits with short nails, palms light brown and bare. Fine short grey hair on hands and fingers. Hind feet - Legs twice as long as front legs. 5 toes on foot, thumb long and opposite fingers, with a large nail. First finger with a very long nail. Nails of other toes shorter than and not extending over toe. Palms light brown and bare! Furs above light grey. Tail - Longer than than body, dark grey hairs

about 1/2 " or less long. Personal Notes I've observed these night Apes in Northern Rhodesia, at Luanshya, in the Friesberg area of the Northern Transvaal in Bechuanaland and Swaziland. They are nocturnal animals so most of my observations have been by flashlight. They lie up all day in hollows of trees and come out at night to feed on wild fruit. They make a sound which easily gives them away. Also their large eyes show up well in a light. Night Apes are delicate creatures, yet are agile and able to jumps tremendous distances from tree to tree. From captured Lemurs I've been able to make other observations. They will eat any fruit, vegetables, and meal. Full grown lemurs are quite savage when handled, and can inflict bites with their sharp teeth. They will jump straight up into the air. If blocked up at night, lemurs makes a lot of noise and are very active. During the day they are sleepy and listless and prefer to sleep.

Body - overall shape like a small crocodile, canal shaped, rusty dark brown above, lighter on sides, white belly, fur soft, fairly short. Tail - upper tail like body, furry, dark rusty brown, lighter from below, lower tail thick, dark brown, hair short, sparse, a keel-like ridge running along dorsal margin. Forefoot - legs very short 5 toes with claws, claws whitish, pads light brown. Hindfeet - unique in that 2nd toe is split halfway down forming almost 2 toes in one with two separate claws, may be fresh, three other normal toes with light claws.

Concealage, rusty and brown above, light white on sides, white below, fur soft, just short. Tail - again two like body, finely haired, brainy, lighter than below - no tail but there's a black line from eye that goes to base of ear. Rustic rust with gray margin. Running along basal margin of toes with stream of hairs. Facefoot - 0 degrees about 25mm wide. Claws vertical, face light brown. Hindfoot - longer in the back too a little longer and forming more or less an oval, two segments at two sides normal to others.

Ears long. Body - a buffy brown above with slaty base, rump more yellowish orange, below white with slaty grey base showing through. Hair long and very soft and fine. Tom Larson Black-eared Elephant Shrew pads black. Hind feet - foot twice as long as forefoot, 5 toes with black claws, 1st toe well upon side of foot and smaller than others, short light brown hairs on foot and toes, leg shorter than foot. Mmmme - 6 Own Notes I collected these shrews 7 miles East of Port Nolloth, Namqualand, in the Desert. This southern extension of the Namib Desert is a coastal area which extends inland to mountains about 15 to 20 miles from the coast. The locality where I collected was composed of open, treeless sandy, undulating country. There were drifting sand dunes overgrown with scattered succulent plants and small bushes. The Shrews made their nests in the stick piles made by a species of Myonomyx. The shrews also dig holes under small bushes. They are active in early morning. You can see them darting swiftly about at any time of the day. They run rapidly with hack in the act from bush to

bush and also to the stick piles. They are easily trapped with ordinary mouse traps. The meal put on the traps attract ants. These ants in turn attract the black-eared elephant shrew. I also collected the same species at Garies, Namqualand. Garies is situated in between mountains. The slopes of these mountains are dry with no vegetation other than scattered succulent plants and small bushes. There are outcroppings of metamorphosed rocks all of which are rounded boulders. There are no stick piles here, so the shrews take refuge in holes they make under small bushes. They also take refuge under rocks, and ledges, and cracks in the rocks. There are numerous at Garies. With a little patience you can see them at any time of the day.

H-B-126, T1-132, HF-36.5, Ear-30 Personally Collected / Description Head - Snout elongated about 3/4", dark streak along snout, below a narrow gland along snout. A grey-brown above with slaty grey basal hair, chin and neck a fluffy color mixed with white. Ears large-wide, rounded, dark brown, a margin of white hair's along top of ear for 1/2". Very short sparse hairs outside and inside ear. Buff behind ear. Body - A grey-brown with slaty base. Hair quite long and soft. Below a lighter whitish-grey, slaty base. Tail - About same length as body black above slightly light below! Short hairs on tail. Base of tail shaker.

Tom Larson Cape Elephant Shrew Fore feet - small delicate foot, 5 toes with black claws, fine short grey hairs on foot, pad black. Legs very short. Hind feet - foot very long, 5 toes with claws, claws black, short light grey hairs on foot and toes, pad black extending over an inch along foot, 1st toes small and vestigial - mostly claw. Leg and foot much longer than front legs. Personal Notes I have collected this species in many places in South Africa, in Mashupaland, in Bechuanaland, in the Transvaal, and I believe in S.W. Africa. They are active during the day hopping and running, or darting swiftly from rock crevice to rock crevice. They are easy to observe and can be approached fairly closely. They eat ants and other small insects. They are easily trapped on meat meal. I have watched them hidden away under rocks ledges. They run often with tail in the air. Their long nose can be twisted around in any direction to sniff the air.

Forefeet - 3 toes with large digging claws, First and second claws largest, the 3rd claw smaller but much larger than the 3rd Claw of amblysomus batellonutus. Hindfeet - 5 toes and claws with smaller concave digger Claws. Hindfoot much smaller than forefoot.

Description - like granti only larger and a more light brownish silvery color. Personal Notes I have collected Eremitalpa granti on the desert five miles East of Port Nolloth. Mr. Vander Neever showed me how to catch them. They are called Creep Mole by the local Coloureds and Afrikaners. They creep just under the surface of the sand leaving a visible small mound of sand which has no definite pattern, but meanders over the dunes wherever the small mole may find animal food such as insects and snails. When pursued this most beautiful of the small moles will burrow straight down into the sand, usually under a small bush or shrub. I have heard them utter a faint squeak. They are most active at night and early morning. If placed in the sand they will dig out of sight in a few seconds. They worm their way into the sand, digging with their spade like foreclaws, and pushing the sand out with their small hind feet! When placed on a flat hard surface, they can move quite rapidly. I have seen them devour dead lizards in a short time. They can eat their own weight in a day easily.

Fur very soft and fine. Forefeet - 3 toes, the first modified into a large shovel like claw, the second a smaller claw and the 3rd a small vestigial claw? The whole foot is mostly a claw for digging. Hind foot - 5 toes and claws like a little fork, brown hair on foot, below on pads light and bare. Tail - none visible.

On top of head golden metallic brown with a copper green tinge on back when held in light. Cheeks a pale buff or golden, a golden luff on chin and throat. Body - above a dark golden brown with a greenish metallic sheen, below a lighter more luffy golden color. Hair soft and about 1/4" long, very thick. Tail - none visible - the very short tail under skin. Hind Foot - 5 toes with Claws, short hairs above or toes, pads bare and gold color, foot short and wide for digging. Front foot - 3 Claws, 1st Vestigial attached to and slightly below longer second claw.

Personal Notes I have collected specimens of this species on the Port Elizabeth Golf course and also on Mico Smith Farm, 20 miles West of Port Elizabeth near the Coast on top of hills. They are very common in this area. They are found in the same areas as Moleerats and Blesmoks. Golden moles are very common on the heather lands, also in sandy soil.

Personal Notes - I have specimens of Grey Wild Cat from Molepolole, Maun, Ngamiland, and Shabani, Ngamiland. They are very common in Bechuanaland. I saw one cross the road at night once near Orongwa, Owamboland.

Personal Notes I have never seen one of these Cats alive. A Babewera hunter of mine managed to Trap one fine Specimen for me which was later sent to the American Museum. This represents the first complete specimen to ever go to the American Museum. I have seen numerous skins at Malepolole, Bechuanaland at the trading stores. Collected several skins while I was there. Saw one complete parcel of Skins at an Indian Trading Store at Malepolole. Black-footed Cat are rare even where they are most numerous. I believe the largest number are found in the South Western part of Bechuanaland around Coolboy and the Molopo River. I have been to Setlhaheng and Ditlwe in the Central Kalahari where they are brought in as trade skins from time to time. At Ngamiland, I never found a native who had seen a Black- footed Cat in this area.

Also a speckly grey, caused by long hairs being banded with alternate rings of black and white; a woolly under-fur dark brown at the base, lighter above; head and extremities slightly darker than the body naked area of various a narrow band hardly extending to the heel; tail bushy, not quite as long as body, hairs from 1 to 2" long. 3/3 + 4/4 2/2 Forefoot with 5 toes, claws short and black, Hindfoot - 4 toes. Desc - A grizzled grey above and on sides, and black but hair banded with white black, white black (about 4 white rings and 4 black rings), tail long and bushy, black tipped, bushier toward base, feet and lower legs dark brown, large like Black Water Mongoose. I got a specimen of Herpestes cafer at Seronga in Nyasaland Nov. 10, 1950. A native boy caught it with his dog. Personal Notes I collected two specimens of this species, a male and a female at Wundowerk Cave, 30 miles south of Kuruman, Cape. This pair were active during the day when they were easily trapped. Their bright color makes them easily noticeable.

Fore feet - 5 toes and claws, 1st toe shortest, legs brown below, darker above. Hind feet - 5 toes and claws, 1st. toe with nail and outside of foot.

"Personal Notes" I got one specimen of Felous mudrat on the air field at Maum, Ngamiland, in Bechuanaland. 45yen or more Burrows were in a group. I believe all these Burrow to have been made by this animal. I saw their dropping at the entrance of their burrows.

Personal Notes Saw three wild dogs one night while driving to NX94 - NX71 on the road in Western Ngamiland which goes to Grootfontein in South West Africa. My companion and I saw three pairs of them on the road ahead of us so

we stopped the car, the three wild dogs crouched low and slowly, crept toward us. My companion Lionel Palmer got on the running board and fired at the closest dog 15 yards away, and hitting it in the neck. The dog fell down and started growling and kicking. The other two dogs slunk away. I ran up to the dog to put it out of its misery. Just as I did so, I heard four grunts in the bushes off to my side. I beat a hasty retreat as I didn't want to be attacked by ferocious wild dogs. These dogs have the customs of cannibals. If I'd known before, I could have killed all three dogs, as they would have returned to eat the one fallen dog. They are tough and tenacious of life even when given a mortal wound.

Personal Notes Collected two Ratales, one in South West Africa near Obahanyga, and one near Molepolole, Bechuanaland. Neither specimens were caught by me. A native boy brought me one from Molepolole. I have seen their digging and dens in Northern Rhodesia. I could tell it was a Ratel girl because I saw beesway and honey combs scattered at the opening of an old ant bear hole.

C.P. 2200'-2800' Shawridge - Macauloy. H.B. - 380, T.I. 220, HF-58, Eon 29. (From Sloter) Description - Form slender; general color black with four longitudinal stripes of white divided by three narrower black ones which run from behind the occiput to the root of the tail, the median black stripe being somewhat widened over the pelvis; rest of the body and limbs entirely black. A woolly under-fur is present as well as an outer longer fur, the latter being very soft and fine. Fore feet with large claws, especially those of the three middle toes; claws of the hind feet much smaller; all slightly curved. Head with a pointed snout, black with three white spots on the forehead and cheeks, ears small and rounded, black with a narrow white margin along the upper part of each; tail nearly as long as the head and body, caked with long hairs mangled black and white in different proportions; tips generally white; young, with a very short completely white tail. 3/8 1/2 = 39

Personal Notes - I collected over thirty Kahlari Polecats at Molepolole, where they seem to be especially numerous or easy for native dogs to hunt. Caught one specimen in Jaries, Memagaland. Have seen dead polecats on the road in different parts of the Union of South Africa. Have been several at night in a pasture at Saldhana Bay in the Cape. Kept a wounded Polecats alive for several days. Fed him milk, craved eggs, and meat while his badly damaged front foot was healing. At first he was unmerciful and have struggled by a native who brought him in. This specimen had remarkable powers of recovery. While he was healing, he let me come close to feed him and put medicine on his foot. In a few days he was almost completely recovered. He then was a wild savage beast. At night he tore fiercely at the wire and floor of his enclosure. When I came near, he let out a terrifying scream and jumped at me. I believe the Polecats to be a fierce and brave fighter.

Ears small, light hair. Body - grey brown mixed with black and an under buffish coat. Hair at base a dark grey. Below whitish grey. Tail - long hairs, thick, a mottled black- grey-brown above, below buffish with black and light bands in hair. Fore feet - 4 toes, 4 claws, pads bare brown, buff hairs on toes, tufts protruding out beyond claws, legs buffish.

Personal Notes Have taken many specimens of this squirrel at Malepale in Bechuanaland, at Maaun in Ngamiland, at Shabowe on the Obbawings River, and now at Seronga. They are numerous in Bechuanaland wherever there are trees. This squirrel is easy to take with dogs. The natives smoke them out of hollow trees. During the day these squirrels are active; they feed on vegetation and seeds and scamper about on the ground and through the trees.

Personal Notes Have collected the Damara Ground Squirrel on Zimberstein Farm, near Windhoek S.W. Africa, as well as at Dullie, in the Central Kalahari. They are common in the open plains of South West Africa, and Bechuanaland - See them as you drive along in the Day time. They are usually found in Colonies, At South West they often make their interconnected burrows in low bushes. They feed out from their burrows, but never go far from their covers. At any disturbance they set up on their hind legs - and scamper off rapidly when approached too close. They are easily caught by placing a small steel trap in their runway. According to my observations they do not depend on water to survive. They seem to get all their moisture from succulent plants.

Personal Notes I collected Claviger's murinus in the densely wooded river ravine that runs into the sea about four miles east of Van Stardens River west of Port Elizabeth, Cape Province. The uplands on the flats are covered with grass, heather, and small bushes, while the rainforest in the river ravines are a tangled mass of vegetation. Here lay fallen logs and Hollyw trees I set traps which caught Claviger's murinus. They are hardly little creatures and tenacious of life. I kept one survivor of a trap, who fully recuperated ate his way out of a basket, and escaped. They do not tame easily for they will not hesitate to bite if you try to touch them. They are beautiful little creatures and resemble small grey squirrels.

Personal Notes Caught this delicate, beautiful little gerbill in traps set around the stick piles made by other rodents. They were never caught in large numbers. They live in the lowest Coastal area of succulent plants and scattered vegetation. I believe they also will make nests in or under the stick piles common in the area. They may also live in old burrows of the Mystomys.

Fine short hairs outside and inside of ears. Body - Dark brown above, lighter brown on sides, belly white, Base of brown hairs slaty grey. Tail - Brown above and below with lighter brown hairs.

Personal Notes I have collected this species on the open slopes on Zinkenstein Farm near Wardhoek, S.W. Africa. Also at Arend's "Vrede" Farm at Graaff Renet, in the Karoo. Their warren holes are fairly well spread out. The openings are not as large as gerbils'. Only a small amount of sand and dirt is scraped out of the warrens and pushed out of the opening. The large gerbils push large quantities of sand out of their warrens in a curved pattern. Have only taken these in limited numbers.

Personal Notes In many parts of the Union I have taken specimens of Otomys, from Capetown, Port Elizabeth, the Transvaal also from Matabeleland, Northern Rhodesia. I always got them as a rule in swampy wet areas, though I have also caught specimens on the hill behind Cape Town University. They are most active at night. An area may be honeycombed with their runways and burrows along low river banks, and in swampland areas. I have found them to be numerous where they are found. They feed on succulent plants, grasses, and seeds.

Body - Coarse dark grey hairs, streaked with brown, slaty grey bases. Below a greyish white Tail - almost as long as body, base half of tail black, tip half white, hairs short and coarse. Personal Notes Collected this species at Luanshya, N. Rhodesia from the swamps north of town. These large rats are quite gentle and docile when observed and make no attempt to bite or defend themselves.

Tail - shorter than body, and ringed, very short hairs on tail hardly visible. Brown in color. Forefeet - 4 toes with claws, foot small and delicate. Hind-foot - 5 toes with claws, 1st and 5th toe very small, 3 middle toes same length, light pads, white short hair on foot above. Mammae - 14, range from up to 20- or along body.

Deccription Head - a grizzled appearance about, semi- stiff hairs, some completely black others grey with straw colored tips, Chin hairs a light foamy grey. Ears dark brown with rather reddish-brown hair tuft with black base in front of ear. Short hairs on ears reddish tipped. Body - same grizzled appearance as head with black and straw color or slightly reddish brown tips. Below a light grey. Hair loss about a dark grey or black. Toil - Nearly as long as body. Black above with short black hairs, and light grey below. Forefeet - 1st and 5th toes vestigial along middle toes normal. Joint trace of nail on 1st and 5th toe.

"Personal Notes" I collected Polony at Luanshya, Northern Rhodesia in the swamps of that area, and also at Serova, Nyamiland. I have never found them in any but a marshy, groovy area. Never should been able to collect them in abundance. They are about during the day, as I caught one specimen about 4 o'clock in the afternoon. They share the same habitat with Crocodylus Shortridgei, and Maxlonys C. Missour.

Personal Notes The only place I ever collected this species was at Levanahya, Northern Rhodesia. The habitat was the swampy, highgrass dam areas so common in this Copperbelt country. I only caught several specimens so they seemed to be quite scarce or fairly hard to catch.

Personal Notes The Dassie Rat I have collected at Garries, Namaqualand, and Springbok Namaqualand. They are difficult to trap as they prefer their natural food to any bait. Rocky ledges, cliffs, and boulders are their favorite habitat. They sun themselves on the rocks and feed on succulent vegetation. The Dassie Rat seems to have certain ledges where they leave their dung. The nests are made of grass and sticks built under rocks. During the day they are about. At noonday they usually take cover from the hot sun. When they move, the move fast, giving one little time for a shot. They are extremely shy creatures. Often they get caught between cracks in rocks while trying to escape. Their tails have a tendency to creak off easily. About half the specimens I've seen had their tails broken off giving them the appearance of small lizards. Their skin is delicate and falls apart when you try to skin them.

Personal Notes I collected numerous specimens of Pronolagus C melonurus at Liliefontein Reserve in Little Namaqualand. These beautiful and delicate hare-like creatures in the rocks and boulders that cover the land. Early in the morning and late afternoon they can be seen sitting on a ledge in the sun. At those times they can be approached. At any other time in the day they lay up in rock shelters or in succulent foliage in the rocks and grasses. If you come across one, you will see them for a moment, then they are away in a flash over boulders and ledges and to cover. It is almost impossible to shoot one during midday as they are so alert and so well concealed. They have ledges where they leave their dung. They feed on succulent plants and grasses. Their meat is delicious and tender and has a taste of mountain plants like blipspranger.

Body - long, dark brown on top, a black spot in middle of back called Dassie spot, sides lighter brown, fur quite soft and short, light brown below, scattered guard hairs long and black. Tail - none. Fore feet - pads dark brown, elephant-like on bottom, 3 toes with nails bent sep- only toward end, compact foot. Hind feet - 3 toes more separated, 1st with a falld claw (black), other claws more like nails.

Pangolin Genus species - Smutsia Temmincki Fam - Manidae Order - PHOLIDOTA KM- 10.20209, 22 June 1929, Obawongo- Ometako Junction, Swaziland Dist, S.W. Africa, 1080m, Shortridge, H B and Tail 775, HF - 57, ear opening 20, Desc - small and tortoise-like, ovate brown scales from above nose above eyes to end of tail, head scale small getting progressively larger toward tail, scales above on feet, nose blackish, face and below brown skin with short sparse bristly furry. Forefeet with 5 fingers, 3 middle claws with long light bl brown curved claws, center claw shorter, hind feet pale brown, 5 toes and 5 claws about 1/2 " long, penis projecting about 1/2 ", tail almost length of body/ with large scales above and below, scales overlapping shingle-like eyes very small.

Personal Notes Got two lovely specimens of Pangolus at Molepolole, Bechuanaland. One was a male the other a female. The female had a well developed eminy which I saved. All three specimens were sent to the American Museum. One, the male, was brought to me alive so I could observe some of his habits. I took motion pictures of him for an interesting scientific record. For protection the Pangolus curls up in a tight ball with this huge powerful armoured tail covering his head. It is impossible to open up this defensive ball by hand. The animal tries to catch your foot or hand with his tail. He can give you a severe cut out with his sharp plated tail. You will also swing his tail. He walks on his hind legs and can move along quite rapidly and silently like a prehistoric monkey in a search for food. He also runs on all four legs. I have seen him shoot out his long rattailed file-like tongue for food. He makes a sound as well. If they are very tough and tenacious of life, their armor plating is thick and tough. Their under body is vulnerable, except the ventral tail is also plated.
