Near Benito R. 25 mi. from mouth, West Africa,
Low hills above sea level, (Bates)

Head - Dark rusty brown above, white below
and around upper lip and cheeks, ears brown.
Body - overall shape like a small crocodile,
canal shaped, rusty dark brown above, lighter
on sides, white belly, fur soft, fairly short.
Tail - upper tail like body, furry, dark rusty
brown, lighter from below, lower tail thick,
dark brown, hair short, sparse, a keel-like ridge
running along dorsal margin.
Forefoot - legs very short 5 toes with claws,
claws whitish, pads light brown.
Hindfeet - unique in that 2nd toe is split
halfway down forming almost 2 toes in one
with two separate claws, may be fresh,
three other normal toes with light claws.
