(Large Grey Mongoose)
Herpestes cafer
Described from mounted museum specimen.
Desc - A grizzled grey above and on sides, and black but hair banded with white black, white black (about 4 white rings and 4 black rings), tail long and bushy, black tipped, bushier toward base, feet and lower legs dark brown, large like Black Water Mongoose.
I got a specimen of Herpestes cafer at Seronga in Nyasaland Nov. 10, 1950.
A native boy caught it with his dog.

Desc - from head to tail a dark rusty reddish brown, sides a lighter rusty color, below pale rusty, tip of tail black, darker rusty red just before tip, rest of tail rusty reddish brown, pads dark.
Personal Notes
I collected two specimens of this species, a male and a female at Wundowerk Cave, 30 miles south of Kuruman, Cape. This pair were active during the day when they were easily trapped. Their bright color makes them easily noticeable.
