Big Sur to Carmel via Pt. Sobos, Monterey Co., Calif.
Birded after breakfast and returned to
camp about 10:30. Left Camp about 11 AM for
home. The birds seen in the valley of the Big Sur
River were as follows: Green Heron, Merganser(sp?),
Turkey Vulture, Red-tail Hawk, Calif. Rail, Mourning
Dove, Great Horned Owl, Allen's Humming Bird, Anna
Hummer, Belted Kingfisher, Flicker, Calif. Woodpecker,
Hairy Woodpecker, Olive-sided Flycatcher, Wm. Wood
Peewee, Wm. Kingbird, Black Phoebe, Wm. Flycatcher,
Violet-green Swallows, Purple Martin, Stellar's Jay, Chestnut-
backed Chickadee, Busk Tit, Wren Tit, Brown Creeper,
Bewick's Wren, House Wren, Winter Wren (in song),
Dipper, Robin, Russel-6 Thrush, Hermit Thrush,
Hnatcatcher, Hu Hon Vireo, Cassin Vireo, Warbling
Vireo, Pileolated Warbler, Iridescent Warbler, Black-thr.
Gray Warbler, Audubon Warbler, Hermit Warbler,
Bullock Oriole, Western Tanager, Black-headed Grosbeak,
Sagebi Bunting, Purple Finch, Linnet, Brown Towhee,
Spotted Towhee, Junco, Lincoln Sparrow.
After leaving Big Sur, we drove north along
the coast highway, stopping by the grassy fields
on the coast near point sur where we saw and
heard several grasshopper sparrows. Here were also
crows, Lark and Savannah Sparrows, Cliff Swallows,
Meadowlarks. The next stop was Hurricane Point,
the high point just north of the Little Sur River.
