Herons on West Side of Sacramento River, W
of Sacramento, Yolo Co., Calif.
May 24, 1942 1PM to 4:PM.
with John Endler, Francis Evans, Mrs Kelley,
Mrs Austin, Kit Johnson et al. The colony
is in a grove of trees about 1/4 mile
square. I saw 30+ Great Blue Herons, 50+
American Egrets, 10+ Snowy Egrets, and 75+
Black-crowned Night Herons. Most of the
birds had about half-grown young
in the nests. Also present were a pair
of Kites, T. Vulture, Cal. Mail, 2, F-lchers 2,
Pervee 2, Tree Swallow Sul, Crow 20, Cal Jay
3, Plain Titmouse 1, Bewick's Wren 2,
Redwing Sul, Black-headed Grosbeak 1,
Simnett Sul, Spotted Towhee 2.
Along the causeway between Davis
& Sacramento were Forster's Tern 2,
Coot 2, Burrowing Owl 1, Stilt 1.
The flats were covered with a
dep yellow composite and a blue
flower related to the Lobelias.
