August 8 San Antonio, SLP. to Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico.
considerable Rufous and some clear gray. (Note:
identified as Dendrotyx by comparison with
Salvador skins July 1, 1942.)
The large trees in the neighborhood were covered with
epiphytes. Ferns seen but not collected were a
large Pteris with entire pinnales and an
epiphyte with entire fronds like Hart's Tongue
but with small round sori (Polypodium subg?)
Drove to Xilitla for breakfast and left about
9:30 AM. Drove to the outskirts of Monterrey
where we camped for the night. Saw 7 caracaras
en route, also collared Swifts, Cardinal, Orias,
Roadrunners, etc.
August 9 Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico to Harlingen, Texas.
Drove to Harlingen via Monterrey & Reynosa.
Between Monterrey & Reynosa we saw:
Prairie Falcon, Sennett White-tailed Hawkle, Sparrow
Hawkle, & Texas Kingfisher. Hit a half-grown cow a
few miles from Reynosa and ran off the road.
No one hurt but the cow which died and was
killed by a party of Mexicans before we got
back on the road. Spent the night at the
home of J. Levy Davis in Harlingen. Had car
repaired.
