PloStore 1942 Orange-c Warbler 1. March 22 Strawberry Canyon Berkeley, Alameda Co., Calif. 7:25 AM. arrived at observation point on old road on north-facing slope opposite the Pauly lab. Several birds heard singing between the head of canyon drive (beginning of campus) and this point. One of singing in willow on west end of clearing (open space in road). Sang and foraged in willow until 7:39 when a second bird came in from the west and the two blew off west. 7:40 he appeared 50' uphill and 25' E of E end of clearing in a thin bundle 10' high. Sat in open perch, singing, for 2 min. He returned to the willow. [Both Sp. Hummers, Cal. Wail, Sp Towhee, Warbling Towhee were all singing sideplaying not far away. Bush tits and Ruby-c Kinglet also nearby.] Left willow at 7:51. Two minutes later heard singing in Uparanal uphill and to the W of willow - maybe 25' beyond. Had worked his way back to willows by 7:55. I examined the willow (♀ with well formed but still green seed pods) for insects and collected some small dark green beetles and a small bug (Tingid? ) About 8:09 a Cal Jay appeared in the top of an alder 75' W of the willow but the warbler paid no attention to it. It left soon + a Pilotated Warbler sang from near the alder. About 8:15 the Orange-c. moved to an elderberry 50' uphill (S) from the alder. [Diagram] Left at 8:20 bird had moved to small shrub A.
