July 29 9mi.N Cuernavaca to soni. E Puebla, Puebla, mex.
and camped on a flat, grassy pasture near some
rocky outcrops which harbored large Opuntia
trees, brightly poppies, & other semi-desert plants
including 2 species of ferns (collected). The common
birds were: meadowlarks (magna), Horned Gulls, Cliff
Swallows, Savannah Sparrows, House Finches. We also
saw a [illegible] (sp?) & a Marsh Hawk. Set out
15 traps & caught 9 Peromyscus.
July 30 50mi E Puebla to 4 miles SE Jalapa, 4800; VeraGuz.
Broke camp & drove toward Jalapa. At a crater lake
just west of the border between Puebla & VeraGuz
we saw about 4 [illegible] & 5 Ruddy Ducks.
At a late lunch in Jalapa & drove 4 miles SE
stopping on a side road into a coffee & orange
plantation. Camped on a grassy hill overlooking
the coffee & orange groves. Set 16 traps & caught 1
Leithrodontmys (skull cracked. Birds seen around
camp included (* not seen by RuS). *Tetrix prosthoma,
* Brunnemom brunneus, Rinophila sufficiens, Grand
flycatcher, Rough-winged Swallow, [illegible] Hawks (Redsh?)
Tiaris olivaceus, Sporophila moretti, Black &
Turkey Vultures, NightJays? Brown Jay (with
white-tipped tail) = medicanus. & a sparrow
with a finely streaked breast otherwise very
much like (Spizella breweri).
