Redstone 1945 2. Black-footed Albatross. Feb 27 "SS. Middlebury Victory," Richmond to 15 mi W Farallons. Return, San Pablo bay & Pacific Ocean. Bird I had seen (see sketch), (from above) at noon a little way inside the Farallones I saw three Albatrosses, 1 white-rumped (like sketch), one dark, and one solid color but paler than the last. Two of these may or may not be the same that I saw an hour earlier, as their manner of coming close to the ship & then going half a mile or more away makes it difficult to follow them. In the high wind, they were much more at home than the gulls but bent their wing's more than usual. March 20 "SS. Fordham Victory" Same itinerary. Saw several white rumped birds & one which appeared to have white undertail coverts & dark upper overs. Also a bird -all dark- but paler than the others.
